Xarelto Users: The Hidden Costs You Pay

Ned McWilliams, lead attorney for Levin, Papantonio’s lawsuit against the makers of the drug Xarelto, lays out the real-life costs that users of Xarelto and their families pay every day.

By Ned McWilliams

When users of Xarelto come into my office, invariably they – and their families – have suffered the dramatic, life-changing consequences of a defective drug for which there is no antidote. What happens to families when users die? What happens to active seniors who are debilitated by side effects that rob their energy, their motility or their overall health?

As the makers of Xarelto continue to grow a billion dollar industry, the disturbing inequity of the situation demands that we take a look at the price users of Xarelto are paying for taking this drug.

Stories Every Day Xarelto Users Tell

As I talk to my clients one-on-one, I find that the implications of their use of Xarelto permeate every aspect of their lives. Users have lived with years of debilitating side effects, dealing with them the best that they can, hoping that their next dental visit won’t cause bleeding that just won’t stop. That their vision won’t be blurred as they drive their kids some afternoon. That this enormously expensive prescription drug will not make them overwhelmed with nausea as they work day to day.

User families live in fear for their spouses, their parents, their child, or, even worse, suffer the traumatic loss of their loved one.

Suffering The Side Effects: What Users Must Know

Prescription drugs are developed in theory to help people live better, healthier lives. Given the range of individuals they serve, and variables in the way they live, some side effects can be anticipated, even expected.

The makers of Xarelto and their marketing team, however, knew that by fast tracking their drug to market and ignoring an FDA testing recommendation that they were providing users a far more dangerous drug, one likely to cause devastating if not life-threatening effects.

These effects have costs. We were among the first to file a lawsuit on behalf of those who have suffered in response to using this drug. We did so because – and what users of Xarelto must know – is that the suffering these events cause - in families and for the users themselves – comes at an enormous price, as shown in the chart below.
