A pledge of $1 million from Attorney Troy Rafferty, of Levin Papantonio Rafferty (LPR) law firm, and his wife Ashley will double the capacity of Pensacola’s Theophalis May Resource Center at Legion Field. The new Rafferty Center will expand the beloved community center with a new basketball court (for a total of two gyms) and multiple classrooms, enabling even more kids to enjoy and benefit from everything the facility offers.
Lumon May, Escambia County Commissioner District 3 and long-time director of the Southern Youth Sports Association (SYSA), will fittingly announce the Rafferty Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 17, 2022.
The Rafferty’s put the wheels in motion for the new facility, kickstarting a capital campaign for development with their million-dollar pledge. Donations from several LPR partners—including the late Fred Levin, Mike Papantonio, and others—as well as from former Seattle Seahawk Doug Baldwin Jr., who once played for SYSA—will fund the construction of the $2.7 million community center.
Troy and Ashley consider SYSA a “perfect match” for channeling their drive to help kids in the community succeed, according to an interview appearing in Inweekly. Troy said he has witnessed firsthand how SYSA shapes and inspires youth for success. “They are developing the future leaders of our community,” Troy said.
This is not the first time the Rafferty’s have focused their philanthropic efforts on SYSA. The couple’s annual $50,000 pledge funds scholarships that SYSA offers to Escambia County students. “This is about hope,” Troy said when the new scholarship was announced in 2017. “Our children need to know that if they work hard and are committed to making our community better, that the money will be there for them to go to college.”
But wait, there’s more.
Troy Rafferty and LPR have for years served as the title sponsor of the Soul Bowl, a festive, day-long youth football showcase. The signature Pensacola event offers a true festival experience, complete with family-fun tailgating and concessions—and it’s all made possible through the generosity of Troy and Ashley Rafferty.
