Peter Mougey Selected to FINRA National Arbitration & Mediation Committee

Each year, a handful of private attorneys is selected to serve on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority’s (FINRA) National Arbitration and Mediation Committee (NAMC). This year, Peter Mougey, of Levin Papantonio Rafferty, joined this exclusive group. The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved Mougey’s nomination to the committee, which makes recommendations to FINRA regarding recruitment, qualification, training, and evaluation of arbitrators and mediators.

“The NAMC fills a very important role creating potential policy changes within FINRA’s dispute resolution forum,” Mougey said. He explained that thousands of attorneys practice in the financial services sector and that he appreciates the SEC and FINRA’s belief that his experience representing more than 3,000 investors will facilitate additional investor protections within a fair forum.

“My entire career is dedicated to protecting Main Street against some of the world’s largest corporations,” Mougey said. “I am proud to be selected to such an exclusive group.”

Leveling the Playing Field in FINRA Arbitration

Almost all broker dealers require arbitration agreements before they can invest in financial markets. Mougey said he will use his experience representing investors in all kinds of cases to create a level playing field within FINRA arbitration.

“My firm makes ‘big law firm resources” available to Mail Street investors,” Mougey explained. “When we try a case, the Wall Street firms know we will use all tools necessary to win. I can use the same resources to ensure the voice of Main Street investors is heard. The result will be an objective arbitration forum filled w neutral arbitrators who will give investors a fighting chance.”
