Data security breach exposes 4.9 million Tricare patients
The law firm of Levin Papantonio is currently investigating claims on behalf of beneficiaries harmed by a recent data breach that leaked the personal and protected health records of approximately 4.9 million military service members.
Tricare is the HMO and medical service provider for U.S. active duty and retired military personnel, their families, military reservists, and some Department of Defense civilians. The massive data breach affected at least half of Tricare’s worldwide total of 9.6 million enrollees.
The information taken included Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, laboratory tests, and medical information for some 4.9 million soldiers, retirees and their families enrolled in Tricare since 1992.
Science Applications International Corp., one of the government’s largest security contractors, reported the data breach on September 14, but withheld information from the public until last Thursday. In addition to the 4.9 million patients who received treatment at facilities in San Antonio, the data breach also covered patients whose laboratory or diagnostic work was processed at San Antonio hospitals.
In response to the serious identify theft risk that this data breach could entail, Tricare and SAIC have made it the patients’ responsibility to monitor whether their identities have been further compromised.
