Coming to The End of the Road of TRT?

There are arguably some men who can benefit from TRT, or “testosterone replacement therapy” - but their numbers are far smaller than the total number of men who have heeded Big Pharma's call to “T it up.” According to data from the American Medical Association, some 13 million men are using supplemental testosterone – and as many as a quarter of them have not undergone any medical testing  beforehand.

Not surprisingly, a large number of men in professional sports have been availing themselves of those testosterone treatments. In the case of those who engage in combat sports, the reason being given, according to Dr. Timothy Trainor of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (which  recently banned the use of testosterone treatments by professional athletes) is,  “...they have low testosterone is because they’ve been fighters and have sustained head trauma.” But then, he adds, “...why should we grant them an exemption to take testosterone and get hit in the head more?”

California's State Athletic Commission is now following Nevada's lead in banning the use of testosterone treatments. For now, the ban is total. Eventually, the commission plans to allow a “Therapeutic Use Exemption” under World Anti-Doping Agency standards – but these standards are so stringent that the Commission believes it will create a virtual total ban on TRT for pro athletes.

This may not spell the end of the road for TRT altogether, but it is the beginning of the end for its use in professional sports.
