The firm's Criminal Law Department is headed by Leo Thomas. Mr. Thomas is a former agent with the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and a former officer with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. He is presently listed in the publication Best Lawyers in America for his accomplishments in criminal law and is certified as a Criminal Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy Rated "AV" by Martindale-Hubbell.
Mr. Thomas was the first lawyer to introduce battered-women-syndrome testimony in criminal cases in the State of Florida. Hawthorne v. State, 408 So. 2d 801 (Fla. 1st DCA 1982), pet. for rev. den., 415 So. 2d 1361 (Fla. 1982), after three trials and three reversals on appeal, the charges against Mr. Thomas' client were dismissed.
He was appointed to the Sentencing Guidelines Commission by the Governor of the State of Florida and was appointed to the Florida Bail Bond Regulatory Board by the Insurance Commissioner of the State of Florida. He has also served on the Criminal Law Executive Committee and the Criminal Certification Committee. He is a former chairman of the Florida Rules of Criminal Procedure Committee and the Criminal Jury Instructions Committee.
